DOG AGILITY IS FUN!

Even when you are standing in the pouring rain waiting for your turn with your dog, it is fun. The camaraderie between your fellow trainers and yourself, or later on between fellow competitors and yourself, is amazing. There is such a buzz to be had from getting your first clear round and having complete strangers coming up to you and saying “That was a cracking round, well done!”

What Breed of Dog Do I Need To Do Dog Agility?
You can start training with any breed (or non-breed) of dog – size is no barrier as all sizes are catered for. Check on the internet for local clubs and see if you can go along to watch the trainers and see if they are the ones for you. Some people start with young puppies (five months or so) but they cannot compete until they are 18 months old – plenty of time to hone his and your skills.

How Old/Young Do I Need To Be To Do Dog Agility?
Some young people start competing at about six or seven – when they are competent enough to handle their dog – and some people are still training at nearly 90! Anybody can do it, from a Lord upwards or downwards. You can become almost addicted to dog agility when you start to compete – when is the next competition and where will it be held.

Do I Need To Be Fit?
Fitness can be an issue with dog agility but it need not be a barrier. There are people who compete in wheelchairs or on crutches, there are those (like myself) with a replacement knee or other impairments. You build up both your dog’s and your own fitness by training, and remember that a competitive round can last less than 40 seconds. You can cover a lot of ground in this time!

If you can, watch dog agility on this site, television or YouTube especially when Olympia and Crufts are shown and see how to do it properly, with accuracy and skill. Then have a go yourself. Dog Agility is great fun!
